The Art of Protest
How artists responded to Ferguson
In its highest form, art helps us speak truths that feel unspeakable, shows us the bigger picture, and challenges power. So it’s no wonder that some of the most profound responses to Ferguson came in the form of images, songs, and poems. Art in America took notice of this almost immediately, observing that musicians and painters were often on the front lines of protests. “We may not be producing anything now, because we’ve been so consumed by what is going on,” painter Cbabi Bayoc told them, “But a lot of art is going to come out of this.”
